The Conway Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Conway family history parchment:
This is the English version of several similar, but distinct Gaelic names, belonging to septs in all corners of Ireland. Among the most ancient of these was the Mac Connmhaigh of Thomond, whose name comes from the old Irish ‘Condmach; meaning ; ‘head smashing’. In the early fourteenth century , however, one, Gillananacy O’ Connmhaigh, was following less warlike pursuits as chief professor of music in the Kingdom of Thomond, other important septs were the Mac Conmidhe of County Tyrone, and the O'Connbuidhe of Easky in Sligo. Their name derives probably from ‘Cubuidhe’ or yellow hound. A group called the O Conomhachain in County Mayo, not only had their name anglicised to Conway, but also to O’ Conoughan and Ranavaghan, they were originally a branch of the O’ Hara family. Among the famous ecclesiastical men of this name were two fifteenth century bishops of Kilmacduagh and the fervert Jesuit. Father Richard Conway, who died in 1623, having devoted all his energies to the counter reformation in Ireland. His eminence William Conway was ordained Archbishop of Armagh and primate of all Ireland in 1963, and made a cardinal in 1965. One Conway family of Cloghane and Glendehy in Kerry bore several distinguished soldiers. One, Thomas, second count Conway, was born in 1735, and Rose to the rank of Major General in the French Army, becoming Governor of all French possessions in India. He also fought for the colonies in the war of Independence.
