The Brady Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Brady family history parchment:
This is an Anglicised form of the Irish name McBradaigh but the prefix is used rarely now. The McBradys were a powerful sept which dominated the ancient territory of Breffny under the leadership of several excellent chieftains who resided near Cavan. The largest percentage of those bearing the surname in Ireland still live in this area. Some Bradys are also found in east Clare near Tuamgraney but this is on account of the 16th century O’Gradys who wishing to please Henry VIII, changed their name to the more English sounding Brady. In early times, several Bradys attained important positions in the church. Gilbert McBrady was bishop of Ardagh until 1400, and three bearers of the name were bishops of Kilmore in the 15th and 16th centuries. Andrew was the first to provide a cathedral church for the diocese in 1454. Nicholas Brady, an Anglican churchman, and poet of the late 17th century was the author, with Wahun Tate, of a translation of the Psalms. There were three early 18th century poets who bore the name - Fiachra McBrady, the Reverend Philip McBrady, a popular clerical satirist, and “Bold Phelim Brady, the Bard of Armah.” A farmer’s son, dashing Thomas Brady, born in 1752, became a field marshall in the Austrian army and fought against Napoleon. A modern Irish-American, Anthony Nicholas Brady had a talent of a different kind. He made a fortune in railroad and power companies, and when he died in 1913 he left the largest estate of its dat - a hundred million dollars. His daughter-in-law, Genevieve, received the title of Dame of Malta in 1927 and was subsequently Duchess Brady.
