Are Aran Sweaters Itchy? Let's take a look at it together.
Hello friends, Aidan here from Gifts of Ireland
One question I get asked all the time, especially from people buying their first Irish sweater, is a simple one: Are Aran sweaters itchy? It’s a fair question. Many people remember wool jumpers from years ago that felt rough or scratchy. But the truth is that modern Irish sweaters are usually much softer and far more comfortable than people expect. In fact, the idea that all Aran sweaters are itchy is largely a myth.
Why Some Wool Sweaters Can Feel Itchy
The sensation people describe as “itchy” usually comes down to the type of wool used and how it is processed. Traditional wool fibres can sometimes feel coarse if the fibres are thick or if the wool has many short ends. When wool fibres are cut shorter during processing, it can leave more tiny fibre ends on the surface of the yarn. Those ends can brush against the skin and create the prickly feeling people associate with itchy wool. Historically, many sweaters were made with tougher wool because they were designed for fishermen and outdoor workers. Warmth and durability mattered more than softness.
Why Modern Aran Sweaters Are Much Softer
Today, many Irish sweaters are made using merino wool, which is naturally much softer. Merino wool comes from merino sheep and has much finer fibres than traditional wool. Because the fibres are thinner and smoother, they bend more easily when they touch the skin. That means they don’t create the same prickly sensation that older wool garments sometimes did. This is why modern merino wool sweaters feel comfortable enough to wear directly against the skin. If you’d like to explore some of our soft Irish knitwear, you can see our collection here:
Many of these are made using soft merino wool, which is one of the reasons they’re so popular with customers around the world.

When Aran Sweaters Are Designed to Be Tougher
There are still some Irish sweaters made with heavier, coarser wool. But these are usually designed for very practical outdoor use. A fisherman’s sweater, for example, might be made to withstand wind, sea spray, and cold weather. In those situations, people typically wear a shirt or base layer underneath the sweater anyway, so softness against bare skin isn’t as important. These sweaters are built for warmth and durability first.
So, Are Aran Sweaters Itchy?
For most people today, the answer is no. Modern Irish knitwear has come a long way from the heavier wool sweaters of the past. With softer yarns like merino wool and improved knitting techniques, today’s Aran sweaters are comfortable, breathable, and easy to wear. If you’ve been hesitant to try one because you thought it might be itchy, you might be pleasantly surprised. They’re warm, comfortable, and one of the most iconic pieces of Irish clothing you can own.
