A Question We Occasionally Hear
Every now and again someone opens their brand new Aran sweater and notices something a little unusual, a faint scent of wool. Or as some people describe it… a bit “sheep-y.” The first thing to say is don’t worry. Your sweater isn’t about to start baa-ing. In fact, that natural scent can actually be a good sign that you’ve chosen a genuine wool garment made from natural fibres.
Watch Aidan Explain It
In the short video below, Aidan explains why this sometimes happens with real wool sweaters and why it’s completely normal.
Why Natural Wool Sometimes Has a Scent
When wool is processed to make sweaters, it is carefully washed and prepared before knitting. However, natural wool fibres can still retain small amounts of lanolin. Lanolin is the natural wax that sheep produce to protect their fleece from rain and harsh weather. It acts almost like a natural waterproofing layer. This is actually one of the reasons wool performs so well in outdoor conditions, it helps keep warmth in while allowing the fibres to breathe. Occasionally, a small trace of that natural lanolin scent may remain in a brand new sweater.
It Fades Naturally
In most cases, the scent fades quite quickly as you begin wearing the sweater. Personally, it doesn’t bother me at all. I usually just wear the jumper and the scent disappears over time. Of course, if you happen to be walking across a field in Ireland while wearing it… you might want to keep an eye out. The sheep might think one of their own has wandered off. And if that happens, well, sometimes the quickest solution is simply jumping over the nearest gate.
Fresh Air Works Wonders
If you would prefer to freshen the sweater quickly, the easiest solution is simply to hang it outdoors on a dry day. Natural wool responds incredibly well to fresh air. Because wool fibres naturally resist odours, the scent usually disappears without the need for washing. If you like, a light cedarwood spray can also help freshen the garment. In most cases though, time and fresh air are all that’s needed.
A Sign of Authentic Wool
The small details of natural wool, including its scent, are part of what makes traditional knitwear special. Unlike synthetic fabrics, wool is a living fibre. It breathes, adapts to temperature, and continues to perform even in damp conditions. That’s why Aran sweaters have been trusted for generations, particularly by fishermen along Ireland’s Atlantic coast.

Frequently Asked Questions About Aran Sweaters
Why does my Aran sweater smell like sheep?
This scent can come from natural lanolin, a wax that sheep produce to protect their wool. A small amount can remain in genuine wool garments and usually fades with wear.
Is it normal for wool sweaters to have a natural smell?
Yes. Natural wool can sometimes have a mild scent when new. This is completely normal and usually disappears after airing or wearing the sweater.
Do I need to wash my Aran sweater if it smells?
Not necessarily. Hanging the sweater outdoors on a dry day often removes the scent. Wool fibres respond very well to fresh air.
Does lanolin make wool sweaters warmer?
Lanolin helps protect the wool fibres and contributes to the natural insulating properties of wool, helping keep the wearer warm and comfortable.
