The Sullivan Coat Of Arms Story
Read the Sullivan name meaning illustrated on the Sullivan family history parchment:
From 1200 onwards, following the Anglo/Norman invasion, the O’Sullivan‘s became very numerous in the southwest corner of Munster. The name is still the most frequently found one in Munster, & in the whole of Ireland it is the third most numerous. The great majority of Sullivans or O’Sullivans still live in Cork or Kerry were their ancestors were powerful. Most of the rest are in county Limeric or Dublin The name in Irish is O Suileabhain but, apart from recognizing that the root word is ‘suil’ or eye, there is no agreement about it’s precise meaning. Prior to their rise in the 13th century, they were one of the leading families of the time, descended from Ebghab (Owen) Mor, father of Ollioll Olum, and lords of a territory near Cahir. Following their movement southwest they divided into several branch septs. O’Sullivan Mor had a castle at Dunkerron on Renmare bay while another important branch, O’Sullivan Beare was lord of Beare and Bantry. They were prominent in the 16th century when the coast around Kinsale was exposed to attack or blockade from pirates. Donal O’Sullivan is a famous name in connection with the battle of Kinsale, when Ireland’s attempt to jjoin forces with the Spanish force which occupied the town, failed and they were heavily defeated, thus ending an era. His nephew, Philip O’Sullivan Beare was a soldier in the Spanish army but is better known for his account of the Elizabethan Wars ‘historiae catholicae iberniae compendium.’ Other O’Sullivans have achieved recognition in the arts as writers, actors and musicians. Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900) of Gilbert and Sullivan operas was of Irish descent. The prefix ‘O’ disappear during the time of the Gaelic suppression and as with other names, has not been revived.
