The O'Shaughnessy Coat Of Arms Story
Read the intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the O'Shaughnessy family history parchment:
In 1585 the area of Co. Galway occupied by the O'Shaughnessys was described as ‘O’Shaughnessy's country.’ This reflects their standing as the principal sept or clan in that part of the country and the greatest concentration of people using the name is still to be found there. They trace their history from the people of the southern Ui Fiachrach whose king Daithi was the last of the pagan kings of Ireland. In the 11th century, they established their superiority by ousting both the O’Cahills and the O’Clerys. In the 16th century, one branch of the family moved from their original territory to Co. Limerick and of this group, one branch changed their name to Sandys. These Sandys are unique in this- the name is otherwise indicative of English origin. As people of power and importance their fortunes wavered according to the climate of the times: estates were lost, regained, and lost again. Despite this, their influence was strong enough in South Galway for it to be considered an obstacle to unbiased justice. When a case involving O'Shaughnessy lands came to court on 1731, their opponents asked for it to be heard elsewhere since they felt that a jury would never find against the O'Shaughnessys whatever the facts of the matter might be. For several hundred years from the 13th century onwards, the family owned the famous Sacred Crozier of St. Colman. This was a pastoral staff of or bishop’s crook which was alleged to induce those who had committed fraud to give up their ill-gotten gains. Big John O'Shaughnessy (1815-83) became an Australian statesman, Sir William O'Shaughnessy, an eminent surgeon of the Limerick branch, also pioneered Telegraphy.
