The Murphy Coat Of Arms Story

Read the meaning of the name Murphy in this intriguing transcription of the text illustrated on the Murphy family history parchment:

Murphy is easily the most frequently found surname in Ireland. The name is fairly widespread throughout the country but independent groups can be traced to particular areas. In Irish it is O’Murchadha or MacMurchadha.  One sept is thought to originate from Co. Tyrone where there is still a  considerable number of Murphys. They are now even more numerous in the neighboring county of Armagh where they are again first in the list of surnames. Old records speak of Flaherty O’Murphy, a chief in Co. Donegal, indicating that the Murphys have been well established in Ulster over a long period. Among this sept's prominent representatives are Arthur Murphy (1727-1805), the actor and dramatist, and Patrick Murphy (1834-1861) who was famous on account of height- eight feet, one inch. Historically, the most important Murphy sept was that of Leinster. These Murphys were associated with Co. Wexford where the name is still the most popular as it is in adjacent Co. Carlow. Many chiefs and soldiers of the Ulster and Leinster septs are recorded but there are others too, notably Domhnall Dall Ila Murchadha 'chief sage of Leinster' who died in 1127. The most concentrated population of Murphys is in Munster, particularly in counties Kerry and Cork. The Munster sept is believed to be an offshoot of the Kinsella branch of the Wexford group. Their distinguished members include John Murphy (1700-1770), otherwise known as Sean O’Murchadha na Rathineach, last chief of the Barney bards, Canon Jeremiah Murphy and the Most Reverend John Murphy, Bishop of Cork- both famous for their fine libraries. Marie Louise O’Murphy (1737-1814) beautiful daughter of an Irish soldier in Rouen, became an influential mistress of Louis XV and sat as a model for Boucher.
