Sweaters Needs Care Too

Hello friends, Aidan here from Gifts of Ireland

There’s something truly special about owning an authentic Irish Aran sweater. But keeping your sweater soft, shaped, and looking fresh for years to come takes just a little care. That’s exactly what I’ve shared in my new video, filmed right at my desk in the heart of Ireland.

In the video, I’m wearing one of our cream Aran sweaters, and I demonstrate with a beautiful green one spread out on the desk. I talk through each step, how to wash it properly, dry it without damaging the wool, and store it so that it holds its shape. These are questions we get all the time, especially from customers in the US and Canada who are new to caring for Irish wool.

Washing Tips for Your Aran Sweater

The most important rule? Never put it in a washing machine or tumble dryer. Aran sweaters are made from 100% wool and need gentle handwashing in cool water. Use a mild detergent designed for wool and avoid twisting or wringing out the fabric.

How to Dry Your Sweater Without Damage

Dry your Aran sweater flat—ideally on a towel—reshaping it as you go. Avoid hanging it up to dry, as this will stretch the wool. Let it air dry naturally, preferably indoors away from direct sunlight or radiators.

Best Practices for Storing Irish Wool

To keep your sweater in the best condition, store it folded in a drawer or on a shelf rather than hanging it. Use breathable storage like a cotton bag, and toss in a few lavender sachets or cedar blocks to keep moths away. If stored properly, your sweater can last for generations.
