On the 4th July 1776, America declared independence from Britain. Our common colonists.
Here are 5 reasons why America's Independence day matters to the Irish.
1. The Declaration of Independence was written in the hand of an Irish-born patriot, Charles Thomson.
2. It was first printed by an Irish-born Philadephian, John Dunlap, and signed by at least three Americans of Irish birth.
3. An Irish man designed and built the white house, James Hoban from Kilkenny. He modeled the white house on Ireland Leinster house now called Dail Eireann, our main government building.
4. The first American general to die in the War of Independence was Irish man Brigadier General Richard Montgomery. He was born near Swords, Co. Dublin, 1738. And the best part is that he first served in the British Army, but later took up the American revolutionary cause. Come on Richie! At least eighteen US presidents claim Irish ancestry.
