Handmade and hallmarked in Ireland.

The beautifully carved high crosses of early Christian times are unique to Ireland and Britain and are famous through Europe. The finest of them are the Scripture Crosses which tell the Bible story in a series of detailed panels. The fullest series of scenes is on the tall cross at Ardboe in Tyrone, on the west shore of Lough Neagh, not far from Coagh.

The cross at Ardboe is unusually tall, standing some 5.6 metres high. It is profusely decorated by abstract designs and a series of figure sculptures which are treated with exceptional detail and fullness. The balance between form and decoration; between ornament and narrative; and the delicate execution of the abstract design, contrasting with the robust and lively realism of the figure sculpture, all combine to set this cross among the most distinguished of the Irish monuments. The East face is distinct, though shadowed for most of the morning by a nearby tree, and has Daniel between two rampant lions, the Sacrifice of Isaac, the Children in the Fiery Furnace, Adam and Eve, two souls in scales above the flames of Hell (as at Monasterboice) and, surrounding Christ in Judgement, the Twelve Apostle in groups of four - the heads of which are not unlike those on the late Romanesque door at Clonfert, Co. Galway - repeating the arrangement on the N. Cross at Castledermot. The South side has old Testament scenes including Cain and Abel, and scenes from the life of David, including David with an open sling before Goliath on his knees, as at Monasterboice.

The North side has New Testament scenes, including the Baptism of Christ at the bottom, and a child held between soldiers, representing the Massacre of the Innocents. The West face also has New Testament scenes, including the Adoration of the Magi; the Last Supper; Christ entering Jerusalem; the Arrest of Christ; and the Crucifixion. The scene of the Arrest appears to be repeated on each arm of the cross. This cross is one of the most beautifully sited of all the High Crosses of Ireland ...down a narrow road, it stands majestic, overlooking the ruins of a church and beside a graveyard which runs down to the shores of Lough Neagh - the largest lake in Ireland; nearby there is a wishing tree - altogether a lovely place to visit on a summer's day. Most scholars think that this applied to Muiredach, son of Domhaill, an abbot of Monasterboice who died about AD922.

The main sculpture on the circular head on the west face is an elaborate Crucifixion scene while on the eastern face there is an even more interesting and elaborate Last Judgement. The face of the shaft on the west side shows incidents in the Life of our Lord, incidents from the Old Testament, stories from the lives of the Saints and symbolic figures. However, the scenes on our High crosses are not confined to biblical and religious subjects only and there are scenes on the Muiredach Cross that are open to different interpretations. The scenes on the shaft of the cross are read from the bottom up. These are said to represent Christ seized in the Garden; The Incredulity of Thomas is said to be thrusting his hand into Our Lord’s side; and Christ seated between Peter and Paul, giving the keys to the one and The Book of the Gospel to the other.

A very different interpretation has also been suggested, particularly by the late Mr. Henry Morris. This interpretation would see the panel as representing two Viking soldiers and suggests that the central figure is the Celtic Abbot whom they are seizing roughly. Above, the same two men with the Viking moustaches are shown, but now they are wearing ecclesiastical robes, while the central figure, clean shaven and with a coronal tonsure as before, has his hand raised in blessing. At the top, all three ecclesiastics are wearing Viking moustaches, and they have the Keys and the Book of Gospels. those who read the panels this way say they tell the story of the encounter of the Abbot with the Viking invaders, the latter’s eventual conversion to Christianity and indeed acceptance as monks at Monasterboice, and finally the time when one of their number became the Abbot of the monastery.

There is some historical support for this theory. One of the first permanent Viking settlements, a fortified stronghold, was made eight miles from Monasterboice at Annagassan on the Louth coast in AD 840. It is recorded that from there the Vikings plundered Clonmacnoise in the west in 841 and Armagh in the North in 850. Yet Monasterboice, a couple of hours march away, was never plundered by them. They remained at Annagassan until 925 and must have had contact with the monastery. If indeed some of their number became Christians and then Monks, then Monasterboice’s immunity from attack is explained. There is also evidence in the Cross itself that the more usual Scriptural explanation of these three panels is unsatisfactory. While one could accept that the artist might well show Roman soldiers carrying the weapons of and looking like the dreaded Viking soldiers, it seems odd to give St. Thomas a Viking moustache. Also, if this panel is showing doubting Thomas, then Thomas appears to be putting his hand into a wound on our Lord’s right side, but in the Crucifixion scene, on the circular head above, our Lord is shown receiving the wound on his left side. These are small inconsistencies that could have other explanations, but if the story of the viking converts is accepted the inconsistencies disappear altogether.

About this Piece

Beautiful Celtic Cross Pendant handmade in sterling silver faithfully captures all authentic detail of the original Cross of Ahenny.

32mm high and 16mm wide. 5g silver weight. 6g gold weight. Handmade and hallmarked in Ireland.

Ahenny is an unusual place – a graveyard with two ancient Celtic crosses. Two Celtic crosses, striking and subtly different from many crosses seen on ancient monastic sites up and down the country, and different because there is nothing in the Annals or in any other records to tell us why they are there.

Of course the local people know why they are there and they also know that there were once three crosses in Ahenny and someone tried to ship one – the most beautiful of the three they tell us – out of the country, but the attempt failed when it was lost either in Waterford Harbor off Passage East or further out to sea. The locals say that the three crosses marked the burial place of seven bishops of the early Irish Church. Again we have no record, but it certainly was quiet usual for seven holy men to come together to form a community of prayer. However if the crosses marked their last resting place that is unusual because Irish High Crosses celebrated living persons or large flourishing monastic communities, not burial sites.

Many scholars think that the Ahenny crosses were carved at an early date, perhaps in the 8th Century. The faces of the cross have no scriptural carvings but are most beautifully decorated. At the center of the cross are five projecting bosses, reminding us of St. Martin’s cross in Iona, again raising the question about the importance of Ahenny in the past. All over the head and shaft of the cross are elaborate designs, spiral and interface and fret. Dr. Peter Harbison in his scholary work High Crosses of Ireland is moved to poetry as he describes the head of the west face as covered like a spiders web with a single panel of intricately composed coiled spirals. The faces and ring of the cross are surrounded by a high relief rope molding adding to its distinctive appearance. The fact that the rest of the decoration is in low relief makes us ask, ‘What did the cross look like when it was first erected?’ and many would say that it must have been colored – only in this way could the marvelous work of the sculptor been fully seen and appreciated.

Explore our range of Celtic Necklaces, inspired by Ireland’s rich traditions and heritage. Here you can see the tall slender Celtic Cross at Monasterboice which are standing where the monks placed them, the cross of Moone was lost for centuries, buried and in pieces. The capstone of the cross is still missing.

The story of the finding of the cross is interesting. In the middle of the nineteenth century, just after the Great Famine, a local mason was taking slabs of stone from the ruins if the Abbey for building purposes when he unearthed the base and head of the cross. He and others in the locality recognised its importance and some later the base and head were set up near the place it was found at the south east of the ruined Abbey Church.

Some years later, when some other workmen were digging a grave in the grounds of the ruin, the shaft of the cross was uncovered. Later still, in the 1893, the pieces were skillfully put together by three brothers of the O’Shaughnessy family, the sons of the Micheal O’Shaughnessy who first found parts of the cross forty years before and who had lived to see the completed cross erected.

The bill for the work is still extant – its total £8.07s. of which £5 was contributed by the Kildare Archeological Society and the balance by Mr.F.M. Carrol of Moone Abbey House. The cross itself is probabaly early 9th Century. It appears to be in the tradition of the “midland” group of crosses, the prototypes of the greater crosses carved and erected in the Northern Province in the later part of the ninth and early tenth centuries. It has the ringed head which we all associate with the Celtic crosses, in the Crucifixion scene on the base, the figure is draped but, unusually, the spear is shown piercing Our Lord’s right side. The cross, which is made of granite probably from Castledermot – also has intricate Celtic designs, both curvilinear and geometric, as well as human figures, though these latter are rough hewn and stylised. However, scholars say that it is the first cross on which the scenes from the Old Testament occur in a regular programme, an important development in the history of the Irish High Crosses.

Learn more on our Blog.

About this Piece

30mm high and 11mm wide. 3g silver weight. Now, however, when scholars consider the quality of the carving they believe that the cross was made in the 9th or 10th century.

Its intricate interlace patterns are similar to the decoration found in the pages of a late 10th century psalter which came from Ireland. The figure on the shaft of the west face is said to represent the Crucifixion: by others to represent Christ in glory with his arms raised in blessing. In the early Church the cross was a sign of victory over sin and death so, following the ideas of still another scholar, maybe we should say it represents both! Below the figure of Christ there are three figures of ecclesiastics and at present it is not clear who they may be.

About this piece

Beautiful Celtic Cross Pendant faithfully captures all authentic detail of the original Croke Celtic Cross found at the Rock of Cashel, in County Tipperary.

33mm high and 14mm wide. 4g silver weight. 4.9g gold weight. Dubtach was the head of the Columban order between 927 and 938 AD. The cross, in white sandstone, is very sensitively carved. The West face of the cross has the scene of the Crucifixion, but as always there are people nearby. The scenes below probably represent incidents in the Passion. At the foot of the cross, there are soldiers at the tomb. The east face shows the triumph of Christ – Christ in Judgement. Nearby is David with a harp or lyre. His psalms were recited almost continuously in the monasteries so he was a very revered figure. On this face, there is also a representation of the sacrifice of Isaac and at the bottom three figures with angels. Is this the Trinity, or the Holy Family? It may indeed be both.

There are many beautiful panels of interlace design and, as always on the Irish Crosses, none of them are the same. This was a most important cross, a sign of the importance of Durrow. We get a further glimpse of the importance of the monastery of Durrow in the Long Room of the library of Trinity College, Dublin. Many visitors go to see the Book of Kells with its magnificent designs and lettering. Not so many know about the Book of Durrow, a copy of the Gospels made almost a hundred years earlier that is also on display in the Long Room. It is a smaller carefully planned volume. It has been Holy isle from time immemorial. An early Gaelic name for it was Isle of the Druids. In the sixth century St.Columba (Columkille) went there from Ireland and founded a monastic settlement; still later there was a Medieval Beuedietine Abbey on the same site; in the 1930’s this was rebuilt by Sir George MacLeod for the newly founded Iona Community – a center for prayer, reflection and reconciliation.

We know a great deal about the life of St.Columba. He went to Iona in 563. The settlement there would have been in the Celtic style., the monks living in separate cells, coming together for meals and community prayer. From Iona the monks went to mainland Scotland, preaching the Gospel and setting up other foundations.

Columba went back to Ireland in 575AD where he defended the poets of Ireland at the council of Drumcaet. From there he travelled on, visiting some of his earlier foundations and founded the monastic settlement at Drumcliffe. He returned to Iona, which was now his home, and died there in 597.

Iona continued to grow and flourish, and during the 7th Century it had the largest library in Europe and there are supposed to have been 300 crosses. The Viking invasions meant the total destruction of the library and almost all the crosses – there are now only three left, the most famous being the cross dedicated to St.Martin of Tours. This cross was probably carved towards the end of the 8th Century.

Martin lived in France in the last years of the 4th Century. He was a soldier, a member of the Roman Imperial Army. He became a Christian but remained in the army to complete his appointed term. There is a famous painting by El Greco narrating a story from this period of his life – the sharing of his cloak with a beggar. At some time in his life he had read about St.Antony of Egypt who had left city life to live as a hermit in the desert. This appealed to Martin and when he left the army he set up a hermitage near Poitiers in France. He gathered other men around him on an organized basis. Each monk/hermit had his own cell but they all met for meals and communal prayers and were bound in obedience to the head of the settlement. When Martin was chosen Bishop of Tours he moved his fellow hermits to a settlement just over a mile from Tours and continued to live as a monk among them. It is a matter for conjecture how a cross on Iona in Scotland, an island that had such close and continuing connection with the Columban monasteries in Ireland, is dedicated to this French saint.

In fact many churches in Scotland and England are named after him and it is thought that St.Ninian of Scotland visited Tours. Also St.Martin’s life by Sulpican Severus is reproduced in the Book of Armagh, one of the great Irish Manuscripts now in Trinity College, Dublin. Certainly the early Irish monks also knew about St.Antony and St.Paul, the desert fathers, reproducing the story of the raven who fed them in the desert as a allegory for the Eucharist, on several of the Irish High crosses. It is easy then to see how the story of St.Martin and his monastic settlement would have appealed to them as a man to be admired and venerated.
